Bangkok for Wine Lovers – Episode II

To Toppermost of the Poppermost

Bangkok may have the reputation for being a pretty wild destination, but in fact, that is just a small fraction of what’s on offer here. It’s not just nightclubs and night markets, you know. There are a number of great places to head for on a classy night out. If you are a wine lover, then you have come to the right place. Here are our suggested places to go in Bangkok to have a vintage night out. The wine lists at all of these are extensive and you can expect a sort of wine passport of the world at them: Australian, European, American, African, and South American are all easily found. For a glass with a view, climb up to V9 Wine Bar at the Sofitel in Silom. If you want a more open-air perch then try Red Sky at Centara, overlooking Central World or Breeze, part of Lebua at State Tower. Wine place you have to visit in Silom is 661 Silom that come to replace the old jazz wine bar Niu’s. While wine clubs tend to have expectations of smart casual, there are those that are truly casual, such as Wine Connection Deli and Bistro over at K Village. Whatever your mood, whatever your vintage, you are going to be satisfied in Bangkok.

diVino
Located on Bangkok’s trendy Thonglor, Soi 16, diVino is a cozy wine bar with an excellent international food menu a la Italian, designed by the chef and owner Roberto Ferin. Initially it took on the form of a traditional Italian wine bar where people came ordered a bottle of wine and snacked on Appetizers, and that brought to a huge and excellent selection of wines – close to 200 bottles of wine.

Wine Connection Deli and Bistro
The huge, glass-fronted restaurant on the ground floor of K.Village may technically only be one in a chain of wine stores, but the added twist of delicatessen and full-on bistro at this branch means you can enjoy your bottle then and there in stylish surroundings with lots of wine-friendly food. Despite looking out onto a parking lot, Wine Connection’s glass front is impressive. Hard liquors aside, they also have some imported beers such as La Gauloise Ambree and St. Benoit Brune.

Opus Wine Bar
Opus could have been one of the many Italian restaurants in town, if it wasn’t for a couple of details. The design: the converted home is a classic space that serves as both a bar and restaurant. The glass-encased wine cellar at the back grabs the eye while the wooden bar and tables are prime drinking spots. Towards the front is the dining area with more formal seating. It’s a classy but warm spot. Upstairs is located the private room. The cuisine is traditionally Italian and it perfectly  pairs with the quality wine selection you can find in the wine cellar. A must if you have money to spend.

Aldo’s Bistro

Another Italian wine bar in the list. The concept for the bistro is inspired by a picture entitled The Hawk, by Aldo Luongo who depicted a charismatic man in his twilight years
infused with all the hallmarks of a life well lived. This relaxed and holistic attitude to health and happiness forms part of the philosophy of Aldo’s Bistro. Enjoy this wonderful venue with a glass from their remarkable selection of quality wines from around the world available both by the glass and bottle. They assembled these quality wines either to drink on their own or to compliment the Aldo Bistro menu.
